Dogs for the Blind - Can't Do Without Them

Have you ever wondered who thought up the idea of using dogs to guide blind people? I mean, who was it looked at a dog and said, "Hey, that dog can help guide my blind friend around"? That's a good question, but the answer is that nobody really knows. There is some evidence that guide dogs have been used by blind people for many years in several different cultures, but there is no concrete evidence of what culture used them first. We do know that there was no real guide dog program in existence until after World War I.

When most people think of a guide dog, they picture a German shepherd. That is probably because German shepherds were the first dogs that were trained as guide dogs. There are two reasons why German shepherds were the first guide dogs. The first reason is that the breed is known to be naturally loyal to their owners and naturally protective of them. The second reason is that the first guide dogs were trained in Germany. The first school for training seeing-eye dogs was called Potsdam, but the school failed financially after the war, as did many businesses in Germany.

Dorothy Eustis was an American woman who trained police dogs. She heard about the company in Germany that trained dogs to lead the blind and wrote an article about the subject that was published in The Saturday Evening Post. A man by the name of Morris Frank heard about the article and asked Ms. Eustis to train a dog for him. The rest, as they say, is history. Ms. Eustis did train a dog for Mr. Frank, and he was the first blind person to use a seeing-eye dog in America.

Dog Breeding - History

Studies reveal humans enjoyed taking dogs as pets even in prehistoric times. For thousands of years man has enjoyed a good relationship with certain types of dog. Dogs which proved useful were fed and taken care of. Over time dogs became domesticated until they reached the point where they were able to serve a variety of purposes. There are now different groups of dogs including hunting dogs, sight hounds, and guardian or livestock dogs. To maintain certain characteristics people deliberately mated different breeds.

Years ago purebred dogs were purely for the rich and famous. Today purebred dogs are more affordable because of the huge amount of competition in the dog breeding industry. Some breeders concentrate on purebreds, while others prefer to focus their attention on mixed breed or cross breed dogs. Different forms of breeding exist, and these include out-crossing, inbreeding and line breeding.

The dogs should be registered at kennel clubs. Stud owners should also be registered to enable you to receive the necessary documents. The American Kennel Club, or AKC as it is known, is quite popular in the US and it maintains a large database of dogs, including information about their lineage, achievements, and working qualities. These dogs are also associated with the kennel clubs in the US.

Purebreds are recorded separately in the registry. Dog breeders are actively encouraged to check the registry to learn more about particular dog breeds. The breeder can use the records to analyze pedigrees, traits, and other important information. The registration process will differ according to the state you live in, the registries, and the kennel clubs. A certain breed will have standards which the breeder will need to adhere to. The breeder should follow all the rules to ensure the health of the dogs.

The dogs will be required to undergo eye examinations, hip certifications, and joint x-rays. Your dog will have to undergo variety of tests and tasks before obtaining its certification. An expert will have to evaluate your dog's working qualities and other factors before certification can be granted.

New breeders are often nicknamed 'backyard breeders.' These mass producing businesses are called puppy mills, or puppy farms. Animal activists dislike all forms of dog breeding. As a breeder it is your responsibility to behave in an ethical manner. Animal activists claim that inbreeding increases the chances of dogs inheriting genetic disorders. They feel the world is becoming overpopulated with pets, and they also protest against the annual killing of pets in animal shelters.

Dog breeders are well aware of the fact that dogs possess inheritable characteristics in the same way that humans do. It is therefore important to ensure that only the good characteristics are passed on to pups. Common hereditary problems include hip dysplasia, heart conditions, eye problems, bone or joint conditions, and deafness.

Breed clubs and dog registries conduct extensive studies into these inherited conditions so that breeders can have enough information to help prevent them. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of Animals) collates useful information for dog breeders.

Dog breeding enjoys a long and rich history. People have chosen dogs as their pets for thousands of years, so it's no wonder dogs are able to enjoy such a close relationship with their human companions. Do you want to become a dog breeder? Make a decision now.

CPR For Dogs - Mouth To Snout Resuscitation!

All those who have been to CPR classes will know the basics to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. You start by checking if the patients airway is clear, then you check the patients breathing, then you check for heartbeat and if, during this process, the patient suddenly awakens, ensure that you are not bitten.

For quite a while now the American Red Cross and other organizations have been training people in performing CPR for pets through classes which include all the nuances of first aid for pets inclusive of mouth-to-snout resuscitation. That's correct, mouth-to-snout.

This technique is very similar to the conventional mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for humans. The main difference is that the person while performing this will close the mouth of the dog and provide breaths into the nose of the dog. Though this sounds humorous and to some even unpleasant, knowing the mouth-to-snout resuscitation technique can even save your pets life if it ever came to that.

The Scoop is a popular website that reports news on dogs (you know what the theory is -'dog bites man' is no news but 'man bites dog' definitely is). In March 2002, they came out with a story about a man in Walla Walla who saved a dog from death by performing the mouth-to-snout resuscitation. The dog had accidentally choked and had it not been for the Good Samaritan, who had received training in this process, the dog would have surely died. The Associated Veterinary Clinic of Walla Walla then treated the revived dog and released it.

Mouth to snout is not the only procedure that can be performed on dogs. In case of emergencies where the dogs heart stops, chest compressions can also be performed. Awareness about these procedures can perhaps save a dogs from death and allow him to live and play another day of fetch.

Many organizations, which previously provided training and certification in traditional CPR only, are now teaching pet CPR too and the concept is fast gaining popularity. The Red Cross in your locality may be conducting these classes and if you are interested in training you must contact them. You never know when such expertise may come to use.

Crate Dog Training Explained

Maybe it's a leftover gene from their ancient ancestors who ran wild, but dogs are denning creatures. ALL dogs are denning creatures, and it does not matter one bit what breed they are, whether they are male or female or how old they are.

Dogs want a place where they feel safe and a place to call their own. And the fact is that if you do not provide a "den" for your dog, he will make a den for himself - and you might not like his choice of locations. He might decide to provide himself with a den by digging a nice deep hole in your garden. You will be better off, and the dog will be better off, if you just provide him with a den of his own. His "den" should be a crate. A dog's natural desire for a den is what makes crate training the most simple of all dog training endeavors.

The first thing you want to do is to choose the right crate for your dog. A crate should only be big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lay down when he is full grown. This means that if you are buying a crate for a puppy, you will want to purchase a crate that will accommodate his size when he is grown, so you will also need to purchase a divider panel to make the crate suitable for him while he grows into the full size.

Crate bedding is important. The bedding you choose can be made specifically for the crate that you purchase or it can be improvisation. Dogs like to scratch up their bedding into different shapes for some reason, so the bedding needs to be flexible. A piece of your old clothing can be added to the crate bedding. Your scent will provide comfort for your dog.

All Breed Dog Grooming

Only professional groomers can perform all breed dog grooming. Regular dog owners are interested mainly in the way to groom their pet's breed, as it is natural. Classes and courses are necessary to get qualification for all breed dog grooming. Plenty of schools have appeared over the years, and presently there is even the possibility to take a certification online, through long distance courses. If you choose this alternative make sure that the trainer has authorization for organizing classes.

Once the all breed dog grooming training is complete you can move on to the next level: starting your own business. Vet centers, rescue centers, kennels and local groomers service local neighborhoods. A first difficulty with all breed dog grooming is equipment, because you'll have to buy a fully equipped grooming table that comes with all the accessories, since only such a tool is designed for the needs of dogs of all sizes.

The rest of the equipment items are equally important. All breed dog grooming cannot be performed without a very large set of hair combs, brushes, clippers, grinders and the rest, so that you can handle any grooming task successfully. Skill and experience represent the advantages that will win you most customers. Be prepared to groom different types of dogs, but hairy ones in particular. The explanation is very simple: a pet owner cannot groom a thick-haired dog at home because of the very the nature of the dog's coat. There is a lot of work for such cases, but there is more money too! It is neither easy nor cheap, hence, everybody has something to gain.

All breed dog grooming is also tackled with in lots of books written by expert groomers. Nevertheless, although such guides are practical and useful, they do not qualify one for a real dog grooming career. The part with the professional training we've mentioned above stays valid. There is no business without authorization, and that should be your main concern!

Tip: check out Dani's dog grooming book and discover the secrets of master dog groomers and save hundreds of dollars on your dog grooming bills without even leaving your home!

Health and Fitness For Your Dog

Giving your dog the proper health and nutrition they need can be a tough task considering a busy work week and especially during the busy holiday season. We have places to go, people to see and not enough time to get everything we need done. It may be tough to keep track of your dog, but you will find that paying attention to you dog's health will be beneficial for you as well. Exercise for you pet will be exercise for you as well. Here are some tips on health, fitness, and canine obedience you can use all year round.

1. Become acquainted with your breed of dog:

Your breed of dog is unique in some way and will require different health and fitness routine to meet their needs. All dog breeds are different and it is a good idea to learn the breed of your dog. Take some off time to do some research and become familiar with your breed of dog. You can learn all kinds of interesting facts about your pet especially related to health like their activity level needs. Becoming familiar with your dog will help you understand and provide the right environment for your pet.

2. Watch food intake

Holiday months usually see an increase in dog treats. Neighbors, family, and friends want to play with our small dog and give them all kinds of food to eat. If you find you dog getting more treats than usually make sure you cut back on the dogs food or spend more time training your dog to help burn the calories. Remind others to help you keep your dog healthy, by being careful to only give your pet healthy treats at the proper time.

3. Safety during the Holidays

During the holidays there might be more dangers than usually. Here are a few of the many harmful items you should keep you dog away from: chocolates, poinsettias, electrical cords, and other small kid's toys. Safety also relates to our pets and we should pay attention to keep our small pets out of harms way.

"The key to your dog's health is the appropriate amount of a nutritionally balanced diet. Dogs that are fed a high quality pet food do not need table food supplementation. If your dog spends most of his time outside, he will actually need more calories in the winter to stay warm, so you should increase his food intake by 10-15% in the colder months." -- Dr. Jonathan Shuman

Yoga Certification Online - Expanding Your Continuing Education at Home

Many Yoga instructors have years of teaching experience; but no matter how many years of training we have, there will always be a unique ailment that we are not so familiar with. Not every Yoga teacher is familiar with creating a modified lesson plan for a student with Scoliosis, Multiple Sclerosis, or Rheumatoid Arthritis.

You could take a specialized Yoga teacher training intensive for each ailment, a group of ailments, or take an online course. If you have the time to leave work for a specialized continuing education course, you have no worries, but what if your employer is not very understanding about taking time off?

Should you tell a cover story to receive time off? After all, how many employers will endorse your continuing education in a field that has nothing to do with your job? This is just one of many reasons why Yoga teachers from around the world are taking Yoga courses online.

Even if you teach Yoga full-time, you may not currently have the flexibility in your schedule to take off a week, or a month, to attend an intensive. You could read books and watch DVDs at home, but an online Yoga teacher course will guide you toward key points in your training.

Online Yoga teacher courses tend to operate in a number of different ways. Some of them use the Internet to send you all of the materials, and then you send your assignments back by Email. Practical exam videos can be sent back by streaming video.

Some online Yoga courses will send you a combination of books, DVDs, CDs, and e-Books. They might also have online videos, podcasts, and resources, which you can research any time of the day or night. The main purpose of online Yoga courses is to make learning a stimulating experience.

The rewards of online Yoga teacher training are convenience, significant savings, and the ability to apply newfound knowledge to a constructive purpose. When you have students who need help, they could possibly hang for your next Yoga vacation, but online courses allow you to assimilate knowledge, as quickly as possible. Technology enables Yoga instructors to help students in need, when they need help.

Knowledge gathered from online training courses will allow Yoga teachers to enrich all of their classes. This ultimately helps each student, who attends classes - from the young athlete to a senior who may be in a wheelchair.

The Process of Yoga Instructor Certification

Those who have taken their love for the discipline of yoga, and turned it into a profession, report a remarkably high level of job satisfaction. Whether you want to start your own business, or simply want to teach a few yoga classes per week, quality training is essential.

The number of yoga schools, and courses available, is staggering. It's often confusing in trying to decide which one is the best. To get started on the road to yoga certification, it helps to understand how yoga instructors are certified.

In order to receive yoga certification, as an instructor, a prospective student completes a minimum of 200 hours of training. The 200 hours are divided between a number of areas. Much of the training focuses on the various techniques, positions, and principles, of yoga.

Several hours are also spent on aspects, such as the philosophy and history of yoga, anatomy and physiology, teaching methods, and ethics. Since different yoga schools often have a slightly different focus, flexibility is allowed - with several hours given to a more intense study of the school's specialty.

One of the most important components of the training is the practicum aspect. Students must spend several hours observing, and training, in designing lesson plans for actual yoga schools/classes. Upon successful completion of 200 hours of training, the student is granted Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) status.

Students, who wish to pursue their study of yoga, and yoga teaching, can go on to complete another 300 hours of training. This level of training covers more intensive study of anatomy and physiology, and a deeper look at the different branches of yoga. It also includes a study of the yoga scriptures (such as the Bhagavad Gita). Additionally, it incorporates student teaching and observation of teaching methods in a yoga class setting.

There are myriads of other training courses offered for yoga instructors. However, not all of these courses lead to yoga certification. If you are thinking of taking a course, make sure you understand what your qualifications will be once you've completed the course.

Many courses offer a deeper study of a particular aspect, or branch, of yoga, such as Iyengar, Kundalini, Bikram, and others. These are valuable sources of information for those who are considering the path of yoga teacher certification, but desire to focus on one particular discipline.

Finding a yoga teacher training school, with a professional teacher trainer on the staff, is one way to ensure your success as a yoga instructor.

Home Insurance - Doggie Issues - Liability and Cheaper Rates

Do you have a dog? If so, have you checked if your dog is really covered by your homeowners or renters' insurance policy? Let's share tips that will help you stay adequately covered at dirt cheap rates if you have a dog breed that is known for aggression...

The more aggressive a dog is, the more likely insurance companies will balk at providing personal liability coverage in your policy by default or giving you one at all. And when they do, expect to pay very high rates. So what can you do?

1. Do all within your power to ensure your dog never bites. Once your dog has it on record that it has bitten someone in the past, it becomes really tough for you to get insurance on it. Here are things to do...

i) Make sure your dog is enrolled in obedience classes. You'll do yourself a world of good if your dog obtains Canine Good Citizen certification.

ii) Make sure your male dogs are neutered. This step is generally known to reduce aggression and related problems. And you know that these lead to biting.

iii) Make sure your dogs on leash when outside. Where possible, put them in fenced areas. This will keep them from running after people.

iv) Make sure you never leave kids alone with a dog.

2. Go ahead and buy your home insurance policy if it has little, or even excludes, coverage for canine-inflicted injuries. Get an umbrella policy and you'll do just fine. It will protect you from the craziest of law suits. Furthermore, it's NOT limited to just personal liability issues connected to your dwelling place, it reaches far to your auto, business and so on

For just $300 a year, you can get an umbrella policy with a coverage amount of $2 million. If you factor in what it could cost you in liability claims if your dog bites a neighbor or the mailman, you'll agree that it's quite a good deal.

3. Get a dog-friendly insurance company and you'll get better rates. To find out, ask other dog owners and get a wide range of quotes from reputable quotes sites. From the quoting process, it will be apparent that you'll get to know how dog-friendly their affiliate insurers are.

Search-and-Rescue Dog Training

We've all seen the search-and-rescue dogs on TV and in the movies. And we have all been impressed, as we should be, because search-and-rescue (SAR) dogs are amazing and they are very, very well-trained working animals.

Most search-and-rescue dogs are the larger breeds of dogs, although size is not a requirement. German shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers, giant Schnauzers, and Labradors are some of the breeds found on SAR unit rosters. Formal training for a dog to be certified as a search and rescue dog usually takes about a year of twice weekly training. Candidates to become SAR certified must demonstrate trainability, agility, endurance, and the ability to get along with other dogs and people.

A search-and-rescue dog is only half of a two-part team. The dog owner/handler is the other half, and there are requirements for handlers as well as for the dogs. Search-and-rescue dog handlers must really enjoy working with their dogs, and they must enjoy being in the outdoors in all kinds of weather - not just beautiful, cloudless, warm days. Handlers must be physically fit, and they must be able to respond to emergencies. Handlers must also have the intelligence to become proficient in land navigation, map and compass, radio communications, wilderness survival, and first aid. Most search-and-rescue units require advanced first aid training, including CPR.

Search and rescue is strictly voluntary. Search-and-rescue dogs and their handlers do not get paid for their services. They are not making a nice fat paycheck for going out into the rain, the snow, the freezing cold or burning hot weather to find a lost person. So why do they do it? There are several reasons they give, but the most important one is that handlers and their SAR dogs are heroes.

Never Hit a Dog When Dog Training

You should not EVER hit a dog for any reason at all. Hitting does NOT teach the dog anything other than to fear you, and obedience is born of love, not fear. Not only will hitting not work, but it is completely counterproductive to effective dog training of any kind.

In order to effectively train a dog, you must learn to understand how a dog thinks - and yes, they DO think.

First of all, dogs are pack animals. That is their nature. Dogs do not expect to live in a democratic society in which everybody gets a vote. From a dog's point of view, it is absolutely essential that the "pack" (and the dog views the family as his pack) have a leader - a boss - an ALPHA dog. The alpha dog is in charge of the pack. The alpha dog makes the decisions for the pack and keeps the pack safe. It's a "dog" thing that you do need to understand.

Unless you are the alpha dog, the dog WILL become the alpha dog. He will nip at his other pack members. He may snarl, growl, and otherwise show the others that he IS in charge. So first of all, you must establish your position as alpha dog, but you don't do it by hitting the dog. Hitting is not a language that a dog understands.

When the dog misbehaves or transgresses, simply stop the behavior and roll him over onto his back. Hold him there and stand over him while saying "NO" firmly and in a forceful TONE of voice. Volume doesn't count. The only thing that matters is TONE. The next thing to do is show him what the correct and acceptable behavior is and then lavish praise on him when he complies.

Dog Training - How To Leave Them Home Alone

Sometimes it seems that our lives are filled to the point of overflowing. We love our families (including our dogs), but there just isn't any way that we can spend 24/7 with them. The kids are "latch-key" kids. They often must come home and stay alone while we are still at work. It usually isn't long, but we go to great lengths to be sure that the kids know the rules and that they understand that we would be with them if we could be with them. We don't want the kids to hurt themselves or suffer from "separation anxiety."

We prepare the kids for separation, but most of us don't even think about preparing our best friend for separation. We go to great lengths to dog-proof our homes. We just simply put things that the dog could destroy out of his reach, and there isn't much worry about him "obeying the rules." He can't turn on the oven or watch an X-rated movie.

Dogs are social creatures. Dogs LIVE to be close to the people that they love, and dogs do NOT like being left home alone. They feel as though they have been abandoned, which I honestly believe is a dog's greatest and maybe only fear. So it is up to us to prepare them from puppyhood to see separation as a temporary and nonthreatening situation that is expected and accepted.

From the day that you bring the puppy home, always close the bathroom door so that he gets accustomed to you opening a door, going through it, and not being visible to him.

1. Crate train your puppy. Teach him to see his crate as a his safe place where he feels comfortable.

2. Provide your dog with toys (especially chew toys) that he can entertain himself with in your absence.

3. Do not make a big production out of leaving your dog. Simply open the door, walk through it, and shut the door. Long goodbyes are unnecessary and make the dog anxious.

4. When you get home, be sure that you are as glad to see your dog as he is to see you. Sweet reunions make up for absences.

Therapy Dog Training For a Good Doggy Citizen

It is not just for no reason that dogs are considered man's best friend. Observe dogs around people in a park and you will notice that most want to come over and pet the dog even if they don't know the dog. Dogs are cute. Period. Therefore, if you want to you can put your dog's cuteness to some community benefit - by making him a therapy dog.

The presence of dogs can lighten up a room and a person's mood. Often people are better are fostering relationships with dogs than they are with other people. Therefore, often, dogs are used in hospitals, at rehab centers, schools for special children and at homes for the elderly to help them recover or overcome trauma of any kind. If your dog is generally of a friendly nature and has been trained decently then you can opt for such a service.

To begin work as a therapy dog, your dog will firstly need to be certified as a good canine citizen. This certification will be made available if you check with your local pet shelter or vet and certifies that your do is healthy and can follow basic instructions.

The second thing you need to do is familiarize the dog with surroundings where he will be working - like hospitals, schools, etc. It is essential that your dog be trained to remain in control, focused and follow commands even in distracting situations and surroundings. This training can be formally received at therapy dog training classes. Checking out the internet or local classifieds will tell you about what classes are held where.

You can even try training the dog yourself but you will need to go very slow and steady. Start taking him to places where you might be volunteering yourself and watch him develop his own comfort zone. Soon enough he and the others will warm up to each other.

Dog Training Tips - Choosing a Dog Trainer

Finding the right dog trainer can be as tedious and time-consuming as finding the perfect canine companion itself. But it does not have to be impossible.

While people have a basic idea of the kind of dog they'd like to have, they usually have little or no knowledge on dog training and therefore encounter various problems while selecting a dog trainer. But with a little bit of research and efforts on your part, you can be sure of selecting a dog trainer who will give you a well-behaved, loving and efficient canine companion that you'll cherish for the next 14-17 years.

Training Style: One of the first things check while selecting a dog trainer would be his familiarity with various styles and techniques.

Does he understand that every dog is different?

Or

Does he employ the same techniques with all dogs alike?

If you have a Cocker Spaniel, you surely don't want your trainer to treat him as if he were a German Shepherd and while you may think this is basic knowledge, you'd be surprised at just how many dog trainers there are out there with fake certifications.

Certification: Which brings us to the next most important thing -

Who certified your trainer as a dog trainer?

There are tonnes of websites and 'courses' on the internet that provide dog training certificates for a specified fee and on completion of the 'course.' Such people know little about actual training, which is an art as well as a science and it's important you look out for someone who has been certified by a recognized institution that provides a valid certification that's equivalent to a degree.

While nothing amounts to hands-on experience and a genuine love for canines, a valid certification might at least ensure you don't end up cheated, while selecting a trainer.

Dog Response: When it comes to selecting a dog trainer, nothing helps as much as attending a class before you decide. If a trainer does not allow this, go with someone else. When you attend class, observe the response of the dogs as well as the people.

Do they seem comfortable?

Are the dogs excited and playful or reserved and cautious?

Training dogs is much like teaching kindergarten - you need to be endowed with a natural ability to do it apart from the relevant certifications. So, observe the trainer's rapport with his students and try and see yourself in the class.

Price: There is one thing to keep in mind when it comes to price. Don't consider it at all! There are enough and more things you need to watch out for, while selecting a dog trainer let alone worry about the price. If the trainer you find is expensive, consider it a valuable investment in companionship. If he is inexpensive, do not jump to the conclusion that he must not be good. Give everyone a fair chance and see what fits your individual requirements.

When the facts are verified and the person interviewed, let your gut decide. As in all important decisions, trust your instincts while selecting a dog trainer. You won't regret it.

How Much Exercise Does My Dog Need?

Exercise is a topic that comes up all the time in training classes. Students are asking what type and how much exercise their dog needs. The answer is fairly simple. If your dog is constantly bringing his ball or favorite dog toy to you while you are trying to relax, he's not getting enough. High-energy dogs such as retrievers need more than lower energy dogs like Dachshunds or Shiba Inu's. Exercise not only tires your dog out so both of you can relax; it also provides a healthy lifestyle for him. So, what is enough exercise?

When I ask students whose dogs are having a hard time focusing or bouncing all over the place, I ask how much exercise they get. "We went for a mile walk just before class" is the answer I get. Taking a high-energy Lab or Golden Retriever for a one-mile walk is the equivalent as a marathon runner jogging around the block. In most cases, it's going energize them and leave them wanting more. Most dogs need at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise every day some need much more.

There are a number of ways to exercise your dog. You can take your dog out for a jog, play fetch, take them swimming, go to a dog park or take them to doggie daycare. If you have a dog that likes to fetch things, playing ball or Frisbee works great. If you don't have a fenced yard where you can play safely, tennis courts work well. If your dog likes water, swimming is one of the best ways to exercise your dog.

Dog parks are another option for exercising your dog. There is normally plenty of room for playing ball or Frisbee; some even have ponds for the dogs to swim in. Dog parks also have the added benefit of socializing your dog with other dogs. Make sure you do your homework before going to a dog park. Most are great places but you'll want to visit them on the days and hours you plan on going to make sure it's going to be what you want.

One of the best options for exercise and socialization is doggie daycare. Doggie daycare's are normally staffed with people who not only like dogs, but are also trained on how to handle large groups. They also understand the difference between good play and play that could go bad. Again, I would do your homework by stopping by any facility you plan on taking your dog to. Get a tour of the facility, talk to the staff and ask plenty of questions. Find out if you can see the dogs interacting during your tour. You will want to make sure you feel comfortable with how your dog will be handled.

Exercising your dog will not only tire him out so both of you can relax; it will also help him live a longer, happier life.

Dog Training with Electronic Collars

First, let's be clear what we mean by an "electronic collar." We are NOT talking about dog collars that deliver shocks to a dog. Those collars are not only cruel, but just about totally ineffective as well. No. The electronic dog training collar that is being discussed here features a little box that gives off loud and unpleasant sounds and is attached to the dog's collar. It is operated by a remote control box, which the pet owner carries in his hands while he is training his dog. There is no pain inflicted.

Electronic collars will not do the dog training for you. An electronic dog collar provides negative correction in the same way that a trainer might say "NO" when a dog doesn't obey a command.

Successful dog training consists of two parts. There is negative correction for wrong behavior, and there is positive reward for right behavior. You can't use one without the other if you want to successfully train a dog. Basically, a dog wants to please you. He wants to obey your command if he can figure out what action on his part is wanted when you say a word in a language that he doesn't speak.

Using electronic collars for training your dog is a choice that only you and your dog can make. If the dog does not respond well to your voice commands, then by all means invest in a good electronic training collar (NOT the kind that delivers shocks to the dog) and use it. If, on the other hand, your dog responds well to your verbal corrections, you just don't need an electronic dog training collar. Just remember than no piece of equipment can train your dog. Your dog's training is in your hands.

How to Develop a Career As a Professional Dog Trainer

I named the voice in my car's GPS system Martin. I thought it was a suitably proper, British name for a voice that sounds remarkably real for being computer generated. At times, Martin provides me with a bit of amusement, such as when he says "At the roundabout, take the first right hand turning," or "If possible, make a u-turn. Oh Martin, you are so polite. If I was the voice in my car I might be tempted to say "You missed the turn again! Turn around, go back and follow my instructions." Luckily, I have far more skill and patience when teaching dogs and their people than when trying to navigate somewhere in my car.

Martin and I have had a generally good relationship. Although, not so much when I am lost and feel he isn't doing his part to get me on the right track. In the last year or so, I have started to feel that after five years together, Martin and I might be getting on each other's nerves. As a result, I suspect he occasionally chooses to purposefully provide me with inaccurate directions or at least a route that is far longer than necessary. But, if we were in couples therapy I suspect the counselor would point out that in the end, Martin always gets me where I want to go. Even if it takes a bit longer than I had hoped.

For example, I was recently headed to upstate New York to visit a friend. They had given me directions to their house, but I figured it would be safer for me to let Martin know where we needed to go and let him talk me through it rather than rely on having to look down at a piece of paper while trying to focus on the road. My friend told me the trip would take no more than an hour and a half. Martin sent me on a path that took just over two. Maybe he wanted to see some of the prettier side roads? I arrived at my friend's house in a huff and announced that I would be calling the dealer to find out if I could replace Martin with a new GPS system. I had visions of Daniel Craig's voice leading me on the fastest route to wherever I wanted to go.

My friend pointed out that I was being a wee bit impractical. Not only would a new GPS system probably cost far more than it was worth, but it is highly unlikely that 'Bond, James Bond' is looking for side jobs as the voice of a GPS system. She also suggested that I might try to follow my own advice. I was reluctant to offer any gesture that she might interpret as encouragement to elaborate. So, I pointed out how beautiful her house was looking now that all the trees and pretty flowers were blooming. My distraction ploy didn't work. After a brief pause, she said "Didn't we just chat yesterday about how people need to be willing to slow down and take their time when trying to become a professional dog trainer? Maybe you should do the same when trying to get somewhere?" All the greenery, the birds chirping, and the presence of a good friend had started to put me in a positive, reflective mood. Maybe she was on to something?

Of the many emails my dog training school receives each week, at least five to ten are from people asking for advice on how to become a professional dog trainer. Some are very specific, such as "I want to be a dog trainer on TV. Can you tell me how to do this?" Others are more general, such as "I have always loved dogs and would love to spend my time with them rather than behind a desk. Can you tell me what my options are?"

Many of these inquiries include a question about possible attendance at a school for trainers. While I am sure there are plenty of people who have benefited greatly from this, I do not generally encourage people to do so if they are expecting to leave the school ready to start their career by offering private lessons or group classes. Six to eight weeks of schooling, whether in person or especially if on-line, is, in my humble opinion, not an ideal option. Just as I wouldn't expect to acquire the necessary skills and experience to become a piano teacher, high school math teacher, or counselor by attending a course of this type, neither is it likely that a person hoping to help others learn to teach their dogs will acquire the necessary skill in this time frame.

While some aspects of training dogs does not require an enormous amount of experience (for example, teaching a puppy to sit), the reality is that most pet parents expect a trainer to be equipped to assist them with a myriad of issues. Many of which are best resolved by someone who has dealt with the issue previously and successfully and has a full trainer's toolbox (filled with loads of experience) with which to do so. A 6-8 week training course might be a start for one's education, but enrollment should probably not be based on a hope to finish the program ready to start a career without much further study.

If you do choose a program such as this as a foundation for the beginning of your education, be sure to carefully research the program prior to enrolling. Make sure the school is devoted to human methods and look for a program that offers coursework that includes (but, is not limited to the following); Learning Theory (classical and operant conditioning, shaping, desensitization and sensitization, positive and negative reinforcement, positive and negative punishment, motivations, generalization, and a history of training; Animal Behavior (development, genetic influences, body language, social and hormonal influences); Teaching Skills (screening, counseling and motivating clients, and designing courses and materials). While there are no formal requirements for dog trainers, if you are interested in certification consider contacting the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers (www.CCPDT.org).

Working with dogs and their people has a very long list of upsides. The most obvious being that you get to meet and interact with loads of dogs (I am still thinking about the little Bullmastiff pup named Shelby I met last week. So cute!). Another list topper is the feeling you get when you have a client who goes from being frustrated with and even angry at their dog to beaming proudly as they show off all the new skills you helped them teach their canine buddy. Sometimes all it takes is helping to teach their dog to offer an automatic sit to greet people so that he doesn't jump on visitors. Sometimes it is more challenging, such as helping someone teach their dog to be able to rest calmly and quietly when left alone so the angry letters from neighbors and the landlord cease, or helping someone to better manage a dog with aggression issues. But, in every case the goal is the same; Helping people help their dogs to live better quality and happier lives. It's no surprise we get so many email inquiries from people about how to become a dog trainer. Who wouldn't want a career helping dogs to be happier?

As wonderful as so many things about being a dog trainer are, before you decide to quite your current profession is is important to carefully consider some of the realities of a career as a professional dog trainer. Many people tell me they want to be a trainer because they don't like people so much and would rather spend their time with dogs. But, when a dog walks into a group class or a private lesson, there is usually a person or two at the other end of the leash. At a bare minimum, 50% of a dog trainer's interactions are going to be with people. Actually, more likely 80-90% of their time is spent teaching people. So, if you are interested in a career as a dog trainer in part as a way of avoiding people, I would suggest you instead consider a position as a night watch person or a lighthouse keeper. To be a dog trainer you have to enjoy interacting with people on a pretty consistent basis. You are essentially coaching people to guide their dogs towards better behavior. And I am here to tell you, it is generally a lot of fun. But, when people ask me "What's the most difficult type of animal you have worked with?" My answer is usually something like this: "Out of all the many different types of dogs, cats and other animals I have worked with, the most difficult is by far...the human animal!" So, if you enjoy people and all the challenges that working with them to accomplish a goal that they may at times feel is frustratingly out of their reach, then read on.

Another reality of becoming a dog trainer is the typical range of monetary compensation that you can expect. Most dog trainers, even the best, don't live in fancy apartments or houses and many have a full-time job outside of their animal related career. Dog training is something they make time for during evenings and weekends. This allows them to maintain a stable income and in some cases health benefits (something many full-time dog trainers do not have). Of course, this means they work many hours a week, juggling two professions. Most aspire for training to eventually be their sole, full-time career. But, for most, it takes many years to build a reputation and practice that can sustain them. I spent two years apprenticing without pay and another two after that building my own practice while working numerous other jobs.

Some of the people who have written to me over the years have become part of my training team at my school in New York City. For them and myself, the path of our careers has been a long one that includes years spent apprenticing, reading, attending seminars and workshops and time spent hoping for the day when our professional life could be all dogs and their people, all the time. To follow are some of the steps we took to get here:

• Attend Classes with Your Dog: Join as many as you can afford with as many instructors as possible. This way you get a sense of various teaching styles. Most importantly, it provides an opportunity to develop great hands on skills with your own dog.

• Read: Get your hands on as many books about training and animal behavior as you can. One of the first books I read on the topic, and the one that I credit with most inspiring me to teach dogs and their people as a profession, is Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot the Dog. Other authors I recommend are: Dr. Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, Susan Garrett, Ken Ramirez, Kathy Sdao, Teoti Anderson, Gwen Bailey, Pam Dennison, and of course, my own books including Dog-Friendly Dog Training and Train Your Dog the Lazy Way.

• Attend Seminars and Workshops: There are loads of one day, weekend, and week long seminars offered throughout the year. Some of my best memories from the beginning of my career are the times spent at these sorts of events. In particular, I remember a John Rogerson seminar in California where the first day of the four day workshop was spent with him splitting us into groups and giving us problems to solve and tasks to accomplish. I suspect we would have learned a lot is we had been given the same challenges to do on our own. But, we learned a lot more than I had expected about group dynamics (great for people interested in teaching group classes) and how our behavior affects others. And to think it is all on tape somewhere.

• Volunteer: Volunteering at a local shelter or rescue group is a great way to be around dogs of a variety of sizes, ages, and temperaments. But, a word of caution: Do not apply to volunteer with the sole intent of adding to your experience. This is an endeavor that requires a serious commitment of time and energy for the main purpose of helping these groups care for the animals. Some, or much, of what yo umay be asked to do may be removed from being hands on with the animals (such as cleaning, envelope stuffing, assisting at adoption events, and answering phones). Regardless, it is a good thing to do all around.

• Join the APDT: Become a member and attend the Association of Pet Dog Trainers annual conference as there is no better place to meet and learn from so many of the foremost experts on animal behavior at one time. I attended the very first of these conferences many years ago and still rely on what I learned there and at subsequent conferences as a foundation for my approach to teaching. As a side benefit, you are sure to meet people who are similarly passionate about dogs and who may become lifelong friends and a source of ongoing support as you pursue your career.

• Foster: If you have the time, space and adequate dog experience, consider working with a local shelter or rescue group as a foster parent. You will be helping them to save the lives of more animals, and at the same time learning from each dog you care for.

• Apprentice: When I got my first dog as an adult I signed up for a puppy class before I brought him home. I can't remember what made me do something so wise, but it was one of the best decisions I have made. It resulted in me having a wonderful relationship with a mannerly, well-socialized dog, who became the love of my life. It also brought me an invitation to apprentice at the school. I suspect my obsessive completion of the weekly homework they handed out and my wide-eyed attention to every word they said in class might have given them the impression that I was very committed to learning about their profession. I apprenticed at the school for almost two years before they permitted me to teach private lessons and small group classes. Finding a school where you can apprentice means you will most probably spend many months watching as many classes as possible before you actually assist the instructor. From there, our apprentices may move on to teaching one exercise in a class, and then co-teaching with an experienced trainer. This sets a supportive foundation for gradual progression towards the ultimate goal of teaching classes on their own. Apprentices may also shadow a trainer on private lessons and progress in the same manner.

• Continuing Education: I am lucky to be friends with some of the most experienced and talented trainers around. Even they continue their education by learning from each dog and client they encounter, attending seminars and workshops and reading voraciously. So, plan on devoting time, energy and money to your ongoing education for years to come.

When I first started out as a dog trainer it was far from fashionable to have a career with animals. My response to the question "What do you do?" almost always resulted in something along the lines of an uncomfortable pause and then "Oh, a dog walker. That must be a good way to stay fit." Now, when people find out what I do, a more typical response is "Wow! That sounds like such a great job. I would love to do what you do!" The path to becoming a dog trainer can be a long one (I started almost 17 years ago), but I think Martin is right to sometimes take the slower, potentially more scenic route. I know for me it has brought me to a wonderful destination. My friend was right; If it takes a bit longer than expected to get where you want to go, just remember that as long as you end up where you want, it will be worth the trip.

Personal Trainer Certification - Choosing the Right One For You

There are many organizations offering personal trainer certification in the health and fitness industry. Some of these certifications are legitimate and should be considered when determining which personal trainer certification to get but others aren't certifications that are worth the paper they are written on.

How do you know which personal trainer certification to choose?

#1 - Go for the best personal trainer certification not necessarily the easiest.
Choose a certifying organization for personal training that has a third party that reviews their exams. Recently, the personal training certifying bodies have used NCCA, an accrediting body of impartial experts who ensure that the certification of that organization has met stringent standards. This brings credibility to the organization and its certifications, research, events, etc. Not many organizations who certify personal trainers will have this professional "mark" of excellence but those that do, will definitely tell you about it.

#2 - Choose a personal trainer certification that encourages fitness assessments and proper medical and general history of the client during the client intake.

You want to know what you are getting yourself into when you train a client.

How do you know if the client has a heart history? How do you know how much stress the client is under from job, family, and other commitments? What about medications the client is taking - do you know how these will affect the client's training? How do you know what exercise recommendations you should make for a client that you haven't fitness assessed?
Organizations that don't teach personal trainers through their certification programs to ask for and get this information are basically "asking" you to train a potential "walking time bomb."

Who knows, in this day in age, what is truly going on with people in the general population internally. Even younger athletes who you might be training could be "on" something and/or susceptible to something (heart attacks).

You need to know this information through proper client intake procedures. The certification program should teach you this.

#3 - Select the personal trainer certification that requires continuing education hours.

This expectation gives credibility to the certification. The personal trainer should be continually learning more about how to train safely and effectively and to make programs individualized by using a variety of teaching techniques.

The certified personal trainer should learn information to give the client of a general non-medical nutritional nature and should be constantly educating him/herself in how to motivate and hold the client accountable.

This is the standard that a certified personal trainer should be held to.

#4 - What to watch out for.

Can you get a personal trainer certification off the internet in the next half hour? Sure. If it is something that is inexpensive and you can print the certificate immediately after paying with your credit card, you really don't want this personal trainer certification.

If you aren't required to study anything nor have any study materials to purchase in passing a personal trainer exam, you don't want this certification either.

Basically, if it is too good to be true, it is not a legitimate credential. These are the certification credentials that you ought to run from.

The health and fitness industry is huge and the opportunities for certified personal trainers are growing. Start out on the right footing. Get the best certification in the industry to set you apart using these tips as guidelines in choosing.

Where You Can Buy A German Shepherd Puppy

German Shepherds make excellent pets because they are athletic, energetic and bond well with their owners. Many know the German Shepherd breed because of their high trainability as a search and rescue dog or a police dog. When selecting between German Shepherd puppies for sale you should consider some health and breed standards. Before you purchase any puppy you will want to have an initial meeting with the puppy you are thinking buying. Observe how the puppy reacts to both your voice and touch. The puppy should be affectionate and eager to make friends.

Later in life some German Shepherds can have a tendency towards aggression. If you don't train your puppy early then you should at the very least choose one with a good temperament to start. You also want to inquire about any socialization training the dog has had. For German Shepherd's early socializing is extremely important and any methods the former owners use is crucial. It is important for the puppy to interact with other dogs and humans every day and early.

Next you should request to see both parents of the puppy if you are buying from a breeder. Carefully observe how the parents react to you as a stranger, make sure there are no signs of unwarranted aggression. The litter will inherit the temperament of the parents. For health reasons you should also make sure the parents move easily and unencumbered. Make sure you view the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or OFA certification for the puppys' parents.

German Shepherds are prone to hip dysphasia and it is a predisposition that can be passed on to litters. So when considering German Shepherd puppies for sale you want to find out the rating the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals maintains on all registered canines based off the X-rays of the dog's bone structure. Any dog prone to hip dysphasia shouldn't be bred and you shouldn't purchase a dog from anyone who doesn't have Orthopedic Foundation for Animals certification for their dogs.

The next step is to carefully look over the appearance of your puppy. Your puppy should have eyes that are clear and alert, gums that are pink and healthy, and ears that are free of all foreign matter. The puppy should be playful but not overly energetic. When you are looking for German Shepherd puppies for sale it is also a good idea to consider the puppy's lineage. A breeder with the American Kennel Club will have family charts that not only show the puppy's parents but also the puppy's ancestors for several generations on both sides. The best breeders will be more than happy to show you this chart and may even provide you a copy for your own records.

Once you have purchased your puppy you should take them to a veterinarian right away in order to be de-wormed and get all their shots. To properly socialize your puppy with other dogs and humans you should take them on walks, have play dates with other dogs or friends and take them into pet stores with you when shopping if it is allowed.

Jan Ryan has written hundreds of articles on all things canine, including dozens about German Shepherd Dogs. The German Shepherd has a great personality, which is better than most humans. New dog owners should know basic German Shepherd information before bringing home a German Shepherd rescue dog.

Dog Grooming Business Equipment and Supplies List

There are many different types of equipment professional dog groomers use. There are things available to you to use that you might not have even knew existed. When you start up your dog grooming business, it is important to have, at the very least, the basic supplies and equipment. Once your business starts growing, you will then have the money to invest in more types of equipment and/or supplies.

The first set of grooming tools you will need are brushes and combs. A slicker brush helps remove mats and dead hair in the dogs coat. If there is a really tough tangle in the fur, you can also use a pin brush. The pin brush allows you to untangle a knot in the safest and least painful way. You will also need a medium and course wired metal comb.

Other types of dog tools you should have are a good pair of dog nail clippers. It is good two have two sizes of nail clippers, one for little dogs and one for larger dogs. If you only have one pair, the larger one should work on all types of dogs. It also would not hurt to have a small container of styptic powder, just in case you were to cut too far up the dogs nail.

All dog groomers should have cotton balls, Q-tips, dog shampoo and ear cleaner on hand. You should have many different types of dog shampoos for different types of situations. Some dogs have sensitive skin, extremely dry skin and/or fleas. They make a wide variety of shampoos for all of those purposes and more. Of course, one of the most useful items would be a dog dryer.

Lastly, you will need to have plenty of scissors and clippers in order to trim and style the dogs fur. If you are grooming a dog breed that has a lot of hair in the ears, it would help to have a pair of 5 inch straight hemostats to trim in the ears. You will need at least one pair of dog grooming clippers with different sized blades. There are two types of scissors that are needed. One type is a 6 inch straight dog grooming scissors and the other is a 6 inch curved dog grooming scissors. Thinning shears are used to thin and shape the coat, especially in sensitive areas.

The equipment and supplies listed above are just the basics that most dog groomers use. As your business grows, you will also be able to grow your supply inventory. It is wise to expand your equipment and supplies with your first few months of income, so that you can offer even more services and choices to your clients. It also gives your business more professional appeal.

Consumer Reports: Baby Monitors

There are two basic types of baby monitor: audio and video. Audio monitors operate within a selected radio frequency band to send sound from the baby's room to the receiver. Video monitors use a small wall- or table-mounted camera that transmits images to a TV-set-like monitor.

Still another way to keep tabs on baby is with movement sensors, under-the-mattress pads that alert you when his or her movement completely stops for more than 20 seconds. While some parents may find movement sensors reassuring, bear in mind that they're not medical devices and shouldn't be used in place of prescribed heart or breathing monitors to detect conditions such as sleep apnea. Nor should you rely on them to prevent sudden infant death syndrome, the cause of which is still unknown.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

The major brands are BebeSounds/Unisar, Evenflo, First Years, Fisher-Price, Graco, Safety 1st , and SBC/Phillips.

Price Range: Baby monitors we tested ranged in price from $20 to $50 for audio monitors, up to $150 for audio/video monitors, and around $100 for movement sensors.

IMPORTANT FEATURES
A baby monitor's challenge is to transmit recognizable sound over a distance with minimal interference from other wireless devices. Here are some additional features to look for when buying a monitor:

Compact parent unit. The smallest parent units are about the size of a fat wallet. You can use the integral belt clip to free your hands, but the antenna may poke you.

Extra parent unit. This unit can stay in, say, your bedroom while the other is carried about the house.

Battery for the child unit. All of the child units we tested can be plugged into the wall for power, but four also can use either 9-volt, AAA, or AA alkaline batteries (not included). All the parent units have this option. The battery option is useful in the event of a power failure and also allows you to take the unit where there are no outlets, such as outdoors.

Rechargeable batteries included. This money-saving feature is provided with the parent unit of some models. You can buy rechargeable or alkaline batteries for the other parent units.

Low-battery indicator. A light or tone warns of the need to recharge or replace batteries in the parent unit. Some models also have indicators for the child unit.

The following features are nice but not necessary:

Intercom. Pushing a button and speaking into the parent unit lets you reassure your baby that you're on your way.

Video monitor. The Summer Infant monitor we tested has a video monitor, but its so-so picture quality limits its usefulness.

This feature works better in theory:

Finder feature. A model by The First Years promises to help you find a misplaced parent unit. Press a button on the child unit to make the parent unit beep. Unfortunately it doesn't work if the lost unit has been switched off.

HOW TO CHOOSE

Performance differences. More money gets you more extras, not necessarily greater safety and security for your child.

Recommendations. Test an audio baby monitor in the store to see how it fits in your hand and how it feels when you clip it on. Video monitors continue to be pretty pricey. If you buy one, you may discover that an audio monitor is all you really need. Also use the following tips and Consumer Reports' Ratings, available to ConsumerReports.org subscribers, to choose the best monitor for your needs.

Decide how much you want to monitor. The latest generation of baby monitors claims to allow the constant surveillance of baby's every whimper, breath, and movement. For some parents, that's reassuring. For others, such non-stop monitoring is nerve wracking. So keep in mind that a monitor isn't a must-have. If you live in a small house or apartment or feel as though you'd like a break when your baby's sleeping--which is legitimate--it's O.K. to go monitorless.

Consider your home and lifestyle. In many situations you may appreciate a monitor with sounds and lights so you can also "see" your baby's cries. If you'll be taking business calls during naptime, you may want to be able to turn the sound down very low and rely on the lights. A video monitor can also serve the same purpose, but it's very expensive and not very portable. Similarly, if you have a large house, you may want a monitor with two receivers rather than just one, although that can be a convenience in a small home as well. And, in general, look for monitors with features that make them easy to move about, such as a compact parent unit that clips onto your belt. (Try it on before buying, if possible; we found the antennas tend to poke the wearer.)

Choose between audio or audio/video. A good audio monitor will let you know whether your baby is awake or asleep, moving or stationary. Our tests showed only so-so picture quality from the one video monitor Consumer Reports rated. You can tell that your baby's eyes are open, for example, but you can't distinguish much detail.

Mind the frequency. None of the baby monitors Consumer Reports tested was immune from static. The closer your monitor's frequency is to that of another device the more likely you'll hear static or cross talk. You may reduce interference if your monitor lets you switch to a different channel within its frequency band, as do all the models Consumer Reports tested.

Consider your phone. Choose a monitor that operates in a different frequency band than your cordless phone. Most newer cordless phones are 2.4 gigahertz or 900 megahertz. If you have a 900 MHz cordless phone and a 900MHz monitor, they can interfere with each other.

Check the range. All the models Consumer Reports tested that claimed a signal-distance range met or exceeded it in our open-air test. Pick a model with an appropriate signal range for your home. Some home-construction materials, such as concrete and metal, can reduce the range, however.

Learn the return policy. Since you often can't test monitors before you buy them (there usually aren't display models available, and conditions in the store maybe very different from those in your home), learn the return policy of the store or Web site where you're buying or registering. You'll want to be able to take back a monitor in case you're unhappy with it for whatever reason. (Common problems include static and interference from cordless phones or answering machines, even the ambient sounds of an air conditioner or a neighbor's barking dog.)

Certification. Although as electrical products they're Underwriters Laboratories-listed, no specific certification program exists for these products. Of course, as equipment that generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy, baby monitors have to comply with Part 15 of the FCC rules within the US. That means that the device may not cause harmful interference and must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. A few models, amounting to about one million units, have been recalled in the late 90s and again in 2003. Problems have included faulty wiring that could pose a smoke and fire hazard as well as batteries that can rupture and irritate the skin.

Considerations Before Pursuing Small Business Certifications

There are certain business certifications that can help a small business get ahead. Typically, these certifications are based upon the majority owner(s) of the company. There are certifications for being a minority, a female, or a veteran. If one was able to be all three, all the more leverage they would have. However, there are some realities that a business should consider before pursuing certifications for leverage.

The first consideration is determining if one's business is in the right industry. Basically, the United States government is big business, it is the largest single purchaser of goods and services in the world. So, if one's company is not a business-to-business company then it would be best if one stopped looking for federal business. Something that is business-to-consumer like a restaurant just does not fit government procurement. There can be times when a consumer company could fulfill a contract here or there. One example is where a government institution needed meals provided on a fairly regular basis. The contract may not be big enough for a food service company, so a local provider would be desired. But the opportunities are so few and far in-between that one should not worry about getting certified.

Another consideration is that even with certification, getting business from governments or corporations will be hard. A business has to be able to handle the job and market itself. Being certified is just one more thing a business can add as a reason to use them. But rarely is it the sole-reason any procurement agent will use a particular company. Between two competitors it may be the deciding factor, but only after everything else has been added up and they are equal. Most likely, it will be the last thing considered.

Also consider that getting certified is not easy. That is not to say one's chances are not good. The reality is that if one sticks with it a business will probably get its certification. But it is saying that it does take a lot of time to get certified. If one is looking for government certification then there is a lot of paperwork and waiting. So, one should really be committed to making it happen. In the meantime, they should be working on getting business from their regular sources because getting a government contract will be far off.

The final thought is that a business will still need to sell itself. Marketing will be key, and because one is pursuing a very narrow niche with the certification marketing will not be easy. One will have to be willing to invest money to be at conferences and networking events. It may take trip to places like Washington, DC. Then there are a lot of sales calls and staying in front of procurement and contracting people.

A business needs to decide if they can make the commitment of time, money, and work to get and leverage their business certification.

Mobile Pet Groomers Wanted!

Pet grooming courses can lead you to an exciting profession which offers both pleasure and profitability. Pet grooming schools call for standards which even veterinarians and breeders usually do not need to adhere to. You might fill an important niche within the pet market and you will develop into an essential contact for the pets you serve aside from their owners. You will have to apply hands-on techniques towards the animals, while at the same time having to observe their behaviors and physical qualities. Further, you will in fact have to spend quality time with the pet.

Pet grooming is an activity that most vets and breeders usually do not carry out. If you provide a dog grooming service, (or become a cat groomer) you will need to be able to judge the psychological and physical characteristics of the pet and then report back to the owner. As such it is possible to develop not only a rapport with the pet, but the owner as well. But, if you observe that the animal has been maltreated by the owner it is essential to call up the veterinarian at once.

One of the skills you will be taught in dog grooming training, is to be able to consider the specific breed and choose what kind of coat that dog actually has. For example, the Labrador retriever has two coats. Its first coat is really a fine down fur which is close to the skin and allows warmth in the winter and water activities. The second coat is usually a long, thin, fine hair that is used as a water repellent. This permits the dog to dry off promptly and to look after the inner coat. The skilled grooming expert will be proficient in knowing how short to trim or to clip at all. To trim the coat too short would most likely leave the under coating hair and the skin exposed to dangerous situations, such as exposure to the sun, which might bring about skin irritation or skin cancer.

If you have these abilities, undertake one of the dog grooming courses. There are many pet grooming schools, even online. Some are the brick-and-mortar type where you can attend daily classes. The benefit of pet grooming courses online, naturally, is they permit you to study at your own leisure. When the program is completed, a certificate will likely be issued. This certificate should be taken to your State Board responsible for certification. A few states do not require certification, however the certificate is a representation of credibility in the world of pet grooming.

Mobile pet groomers have a profitable business opportunity as they can decide on the breed of animals to preferably groom as well as the fees they may charge. Further, becoming a cat groomer as well, might fill a valuable niche - they are in demand. There is also a shortage of mobile pet groomers in rural regions, so moving to a place without a dog grooming service could possibly be the start of quite a profitable career.

Complete Your SBA 8a Certification In Four Easy Steps

Why have you been putting off getting SBA 8a certification? It is NOT that difficult to get certified if you really want to break into government contracting. And you do NOT have to pay someone else to help you fill out the form. If you can read and follow instructions, you can do it. How do I know? I successfully completed my company SBA 8a certification in 2004. Here's the blueprint... now get it done!

Where do you start?

There is an electronic application form at the SBA website. If you take the time to read the four steps to the Electronic Application Process, you will be prepared to complete it in the least amount of time with the least amount of personal pain. I recommend submitting the electronic application form over the mail-in version because you will receive your results back in days, NOT weeks.

Step One: Get registered with CCR

The first step is to get your company registered at the federal Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database The CCR database is a single point of vendor registration and is key to streamlining the procurement process. Note: It might take 24 - 72 hours to get your CCR profile active in the system. Then you can proceed.

Step Two: Register in the SBA General Login System (GLS)

This system supports all services offered by the SBA. Two key pieces of information you will need to know are your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or your Social Security Number. You will also need to register for a Dun & Bradstreet number (DUNS). The DUNS is a requirement for all federal contracts as well as many major corporations. Note: You can register for the FREE service and do not have to sign up for any other monthly fee-based D&B services.

Step Three: Download, sign, get notarized and mail-in Signature Authorization card

This is the only "manual" portion of the process. It becomes the trigger for the SBA to begin screening and reviewing your Electronic application. Be sure you send your Signature Authorization card to the appropriate SBA Program Certification & Eligibility address, based upon the state you are doing business.

Step Four: Begin SBA 8a Application Process via the GLS

Using your new GLS user name / password - enter your information into the application online. Note: You do not have to complete the application in one sitting, fill out as much as you can and then save and come back later. How long will it take to complete the application? The more complex the company structure, the longer it takes to fill out the information. For example:a 100% owned sole-proprietorship owned will not take as long as a multi-owner corporation located in a community property state. Note: My application took about two hours total to complete. You will need your tax returns from the past three years and other documents for reference.

The SBA does offer FAQs and an online training course to get you prepared for the application process. Once you have submitted the application, by law, there is a 90 day response time on getting back to you. My application was reviewed in less than 30 days. So if you submit the application online, you will get a much more timely response.

One other note: Caucasian women have more difficulty in getting SBA 8a certified. One extra support document you may be asked to prepare and submit is a disadvantaged social narrative. This is a paper that documents how overcome social, economic and business factors have influenced your inability to succeed to your maximum capability. Can you write this paper without hiring a company to prepare it for you? YES. Learn how I took my experience and now help hundreds of other women to gain confidence to prepare their own narratives. Read more about the toolkit I prepared at my company website.

Ok, now you know the four steps to the SBA 8a process, what is keeping you from starting your application today?

Dog Training Certification Tips

There are a lot of pet owners everywhere. Most of these pets are dogs. This furry four legged animal is man's best friend. A lot of pet owners are starting to feel the need of having them go through training with professional trainers.

Training dogs have become a possible job that will need to be filled in the coming years. To be a qualified for this kind of job you will need dog training certification. Knowledge on how to train canines is becoming a great job that anybody can benefit from, as long as they have their dog training certification and love for furry animals.

To get your qualification, you have to get enrolled a certification program. Finding a good training program can be quite hard. To help you find a reliable dog training program, I have listed a few things that a dog training course needs:

A dog training program should about the history on how to train canines. Some of the activities have been found to be dated back at early 1900's. It discusses methods and ways they were trained during the earlier eras.

The program should also include discussions on how they behave. This usually includes body language, behavioral genetics, developmental behavior, characteristics of different breeds, and social development. A dog trainer with a dog training certification that includes being well versed with different behavior of dogs will likely get hired immediately.

This is quite important. Any trainer should know how to train dogs so that the animal can interact with its owners. A well trained dog should be able to follow simple commands of its owner. If a dog behaves badly, punishment should be given. If the animal does well, a reward is important.

A good dog training program should also include the business part. It should teach trainers how to train others in the future and maintain the business well.

As dog trainer you will need the knowledge of how to structure a class. This will include what materials you will need, how to choose your client, what advice you will need to give to dog owners, and a knowledge on how to motivate other dog handlers.

Usually a good training program can go on for weeks or months. It usually consists of various trainings on how to handle dogs. There are programs that are short lived. Some of it only lasts a day or two. In this span of time, a dog trainer will probably not learn anything helpful at all.

Have you considered getting a job working with dogs then check out this great Dog Training Certification resources and articles and get on the road to a new rewarding career.

Dog Training DVD, A Great Investment in Your Dog

Purchasing a good quality dog training DVD is a smart investment into your dog training program. If you are a new dog trainer that has trained less than 10 working dogs or 30 pet dogs then it is important to establish a library of dog training DVDs and books. Every dog trainer develops his or her own style and method of training. Knowing how other professional dog trainers train and handle dogs is key to establishing your training methodology and curriculum. Even established professional dog trainers will purchase other trainers dog training DVD in order to keep current on different training methods.

If you are training pet dogs for obedience then you will have no trouble finding a good dog training DVD to employ in your training program. In fact you may have a problem choosing the best dog training DVD s. If you belong to a dog training organization you will have the ability to ask your peers what dog training DVD they recommend. In addition if you have interned with an established professional trainer you can ask what dog training DVD they would recommend. Most top dog trainers have produced their own dog training DVD that they provide to their clients owners. As your training program grows and develops, you should also consider developing your own dog training DVD that reinforces your training lessons. Any time a dog develops a bad habit the owner can simply take out your dog training DVD to address the issue.

Professional dog trainers that train law enforcement, handicap, hunting and lead dogs also use a dog training DVD as part of their training program. The greatest value of developing a good dog training DVD for working dogs comes from the fact the handler will have a copy of the training process to review. Professional working dogs must perform almost without error on demand. People's lives are dependent on the performance of these working dogs. A quality dog training DVD will allow the handler to keep themselves and their dog current by viewing and practicing the certification processes. Professional working dog trainers usually belong to a professional organization that established standards for both the handler and his or her dog. Some of these organizations have produced a dog training DVD that will assist trainers in achieving these standards of performance.

The use of a dog training DVD in a dog training program will help provide training uniformity and standards. If you are a professional dog trainer then one of your objectives should be developing your own quality dog training DVD. It will provide you with additional income while giving your clients a very good tool that they can use to review the training process. If used properly it will allow them to correctly tune up the performance of their dog. A good dog training DVD will assure the skills learned during the training process are continued long-term.
