Wondering How to Improve Your Dog's Immune System? Here Are Some Tips

One way to keep your dog healthy and active is to boost your dog's immune system. While the immune system itself is complicated, making sure you have the basics covered will go along way to improve the health of your dog.

The immune system of your dog is complicated. In fact there are 4 different types of immune system problems including hypersensitivity (allergy), neoplasia (cancer, rapid cell growth), autoimmunity (body attacks itself) and immunodeficiency (infection fighting problems).

In general, immune problems are considered to be an inherited disorder. Weakening of the immune system can occur due to age, or living conditions which are less than optimal such as poor nutritional intake, a lack of exercise, or even not being able to drink enough fresh water.

Improving your dog's immune system - What you need to do?

1. Improve the Diet - Only buy AAFCO certified foods. Preference is for those that do not contain artificial ingredients. Certification ensures that food contains the nutrients a dog requires. There two certifications. Make sure the label says "nutritionally complete for all life stages". Avoid labels which are AAFCO certified, but say "formulated to meet AAFCO standards" as this is a lower standard than the "nutritionally complete" label.

2. Physical exercise is a must for pets. Dogs in the wild usually hunt for food and stay physically active most of the time. Conversely, domesticated dogs stay inactive most of the time. This not only makes them physically weak, but also makes them feel lonely and unhappy. Regular physical exercise, even if it is for a brief period of time every day, can strengthen your dog's limbs and keep him happy as well.

3. Consider giving your dog natural dietary supplements which contain all the essential minerals, vitamins, and other substances which are needed for your dog's body. For dog's that respond, these supplements are thought to improve your dog's immunity, cleanse its body, strengthen its inner organs, maintain normal levels of blood pressure and blood sugar, and support long life and vitalit

Now, let me tell you how you can choose the right natural dietary supplement for your dog.

There are two important things you should consider while choosing a dietary supplement for your dog - quality of ingredients and FDA approval.

Ingredients - The quality of a dietary supplement is directly proportional to the quality of its ingredients. So, always go for a product which contains the best possible natural ingredients. Some of the names you should look for include Huang Qi, mistletoe, Indian ginseng, Echinacea purpurea, milk thistle, and cat's claw. These are very powerful herbs which can boost your dog's immune system considerably if consumed regularly. Also, look for minerals like zinc and selenium and essential vitamins like A, B, C, and E.

FDA approval - This is one of the simplest ways to separate the genuine products from the fake ones. Always choose a product which meets the standards set by the DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health Education Act).

There you have it folks. I have revealed the secret to boost your dog's immunity and keep it healthy, young, active, and happy. Follow these tips and take good care of your dog.

How to Become a Certified Teacher in the State of Texas

Unsure of the procedures for teacher certification requirements in Texas? Here's a brief rundown on meeting the requirements to become a certified teacher in the state of Texas.

Teacher Certification Requirements in Texas

Like many other states, the first steps for achieving teacher certification in Texas is a college degree. Acquiring certification requires completing degree work in a specific subject, in addition to completing courses in a state teacher training program.

As part of your field work, you will need to complete 45 observation hours observing qualified teachers in your desired subject area. Most programs can match you with experienced teachers willing to mentor a prospective teacher.

You will also need to complete a student teaching practicum where you are responsible for teaching classes under the supervision of an experienced teacher. Your mentor will evaluate your performance by offering you tips and discussing the lessons at large. Depending on the age groups, expect student teaching practicum to last at least one semester.

Texas Certification Exams

The state of Texas requires that you pass certification exams in both pedagogy and professional responsibilities that are specific to the grade levels and subjects you desire to teach. These exams are called the Texas Examination of Educational Standards and the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas.

The Application Process of Acquiring Teacher Certification in Texas

The State Board of Educator Certification website walks you through the process of attaining certification. You will need to create an account before you actually take the exams. The site not only helps you through what appears to be a complex and complicated certification process, but it also keeps your scores and credentials on file.

Tips for Teachers Who Seek Certification

Ideally, you should discuss your future plans with your college advisor during your junior year. Your college advisor can help you familiarize yourself with degree and certification procedures.

If you already possess an academic degree but have not completed an approved teacher training program, you can still become a certified teacher. The State Board website provides information on alternative methods of teacher certification in Texas.

The State Board website also explains the certification process for teachers who are certified from other states.

Good Luck!

Financial Statements For 8(a) Certification

While the goal of having a business 8(a) certified is to gain the United States Government as a customer, the 8(a) application process itself has a huge additional benefit: the 8(a) application forces you to get your business organization in order. This means compiling several business documents. Most important of these are the company financial statements.

Why your small business needs financial statements

Small business owners are in the difficult position of having a few people trying to do everything. Often things fall by the wayside in the pursuit of survival.

To many small business owners, the company financial records may seem confusing. This makes sense; they are specialists in their own fields rather than accounting. Yet the importance of having good financial statements is paramount to success, whether it is in the 8(a) application process or business in general. Not only do you need a complete set of accurate financial statements to become 8(a) certified, but you need them to get a bank loan and money from investors.

Company financial statements are very simple documents which can include a vast amount of information. An easy way to understand what goes into a set of financial statements is to break the financial statements into three parts.

These parts are:

  • Income Statement

  • Assets and Liabilities

  • Equity

Income Statement.

The Income Statement shows the money coming in and the money going out of your business during a given time called the reporting period a day, week, month, year or a date range of your choosing.

The Income Statement has three sections: Income, Cost of Goods Sold, and Expenses. The

While the business financial statements are just one piece of the 8(a) application puzzle, properly prepared and updated financial statements take a lot of the guesswork out of running a business, making your business more efficient and competitive. Dog Breeds - Pure Breed vs Mutt

Sometimes when a family is thinking about getting a family dog, they begin to discuss the qualities of dogs that are a pure breed. For example, an active family might discuss dogs like a Labrador or a German shepherd or even a Jack Russell. While families with a more sedate lifestyle might discuss owning a poodle or a cocker spaniel. The fact is that most mixed breeds - or "mutts," as they are often called - make just as good or better pets than pure-breed dogs.

Nobody knows why, but it seems that the better qualities of a breed are more often passed on to mixed-breed offspring than to purebred offspring, and breed problems are more often passed on to the purebred offspring than to mixed-breed offspring. For example, hip dyslexia is a common problem among purebred German shepherds, but rarely seen in a mixed breed with German shepherd ancestors. And yet, the German shepherd traits of owner loyalty and protectiveness are passed on to the mixed breed.

Think about the possibilities. Theoretically, a mixed breed could have the house pet qualities of a poodle, the protective instincts of a Doberman, and the maternal instincts of a Saint Bernard, all rolled into one four-legged friend. Granted, the mixed breed isn't going to be as "pretty" as a pure breed and you will often be asked, "what breed IS that?" But you will probably have a better family pet than you would have had with any pure breed.

I'm often asked if pure breeds are smarter and more easily trained than mutts, and the answer is an unqualified, "No." Actually, mixed breeds are often easier to train and smarter than pure breeds because often there is a lot of in-breeding in pure-breed lines in order to achieve a particular "look." Go adopt the family dog from your local animal shelter!

Dogs for the Blind - Can't Do Without Them

Have you ever wondered who thought up the idea of using dogs to guide blind people? I mean, who was it looked at a dog and said, "Hey, that dog can help guide my blind friend around"? That's a good question, but the answer is that nobody really knows. There is some evidence that guide dogs have been used by blind people for many years in several different cultures, but there is no concrete evidence of what culture used them first. We do know that there was no real guide dog program in existence until after World War I.

When most people think of a guide dog, they picture a German shepherd. That is probably because German shepherds were the first dogs that were trained as guide dogs. There are two reasons why German shepherds were the first guide dogs. The first reason is that the breed is known to be naturally loyal to their owners and naturally protective of them. The second reason is that the first guide dogs were trained in Germany. The first school for training seeing-eye dogs was called Potsdam, but the school failed financially after the war, as did many businesses in Germany.

Dorothy Eustis was an American woman who trained police dogs. She heard about the company in Germany that trained dogs to lead the blind and wrote an article about the subject that was published in The Saturday Evening Post. A man by the name of Morris Frank heard about the article and asked Ms. Eustis to train a dog for him. The rest, as they say, is history. Ms. Eustis did train a dog for Mr. Frank, and he was the first blind person to use a seeing-eye dog in America.

Dog Breeding - History

Studies reveal humans enjoyed taking dogs as pets even in prehistoric times. For thousands of years man has enjoyed a good relationship with certain types of dog. Dogs which proved useful were fed and taken care of. Over time dogs became domesticated until they reached the point where they were able to serve a variety of purposes. There are now different groups of dogs including hunting dogs, sight hounds, and guardian or livestock dogs. To maintain certain characteristics people deliberately mated different breeds.

Years ago purebred dogs were purely for the rich and famous. Today purebred dogs are more affordable because of the huge amount of competition in the dog breeding industry. Some breeders concentrate on purebreds, while others prefer to focus their attention on mixed breed or cross breed dogs. Different forms of breeding exist, and these include out-crossing, inbreeding and line breeding.

The dogs should be registered at kennel clubs. Stud owners should also be registered to enable you to receive the necessary documents. The American Kennel Club, or AKC as it is known, is quite popular in the US and it maintains a large database of dogs, including information about their lineage, achievements, and working qualities. These dogs are also associated with the kennel clubs in the US.

Purebreds are recorded separately in the registry. Dog breeders are actively encouraged to check the registry to learn more about particular dog breeds. The breeder can use the records to analyze pedigrees, traits, and other important information. The registration process will differ according to the state you live in, the registries, and the kennel clubs. A certain breed will have standards which the breeder will need to adhere to. The breeder should follow all the rules to ensure the health of the dogs.

The dogs will be required to undergo eye examinations, hip certifications, and joint x-rays. Your dog will have to undergo variety of tests and tasks before obtaining its certification. An expert will have to evaluate your dog's working qualities and other factors before certification can be granted.

New breeders are often nicknamed 'backyard breeders.' These mass producing businesses are called puppy mills, or puppy farms. Animal activists dislike all forms of dog breeding. As a breeder it is your responsibility to behave in an ethical manner. Animal activists claim that inbreeding increases the chances of dogs inheriting genetic disorders. They feel the world is becoming overpopulated with pets, and they also protest against the annual killing of pets in animal shelters.

Dog breeders are well aware of the fact that dogs possess inheritable characteristics in the same way that humans do. It is therefore important to ensure that only the good characteristics are passed on to pups. Common hereditary problems include hip dysplasia, heart conditions, eye problems, bone or joint conditions, and deafness.

Breed clubs and dog registries conduct extensive studies into these inherited conditions so that breeders can have enough information to help prevent them. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of Animals) collates useful information for dog breeders.

Dog breeding enjoys a long and rich history. People have chosen dogs as their pets for thousands of years, so it's no wonder dogs are able to enjoy such a close relationship with their human companions. Do you want to become a dog breeder? Make a decision now.

CPR For Dogs - Mouth To Snout Resuscitation!

All those who have been to CPR classes will know the basics to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. You start by checking if the patients airway is clear, then you check the patients breathing, then you check for heartbeat and if, during this process, the patient suddenly awakens, ensure that you are not bitten.

For quite a while now the American Red Cross and other organizations have been training people in performing CPR for pets through classes which include all the nuances of first aid for pets inclusive of mouth-to-snout resuscitation. That's correct, mouth-to-snout.

This technique is very similar to the conventional mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for humans. The main difference is that the person while performing this will close the mouth of the dog and provide breaths into the nose of the dog. Though this sounds humorous and to some even unpleasant, knowing the mouth-to-snout resuscitation technique can even save your pets life if it ever came to that.

The Scoop is a popular website that reports news on dogs (you know what the theory is -'dog bites man' is no news but 'man bites dog' definitely is). In March 2002, they came out with a story about a man in Walla Walla who saved a dog from death by performing the mouth-to-snout resuscitation. The dog had accidentally choked and had it not been for the Good Samaritan, who had received training in this process, the dog would have surely died. The Associated Veterinary Clinic of Walla Walla then treated the revived dog and released it.

Mouth to snout is not the only procedure that can be performed on dogs. In case of emergencies where the dogs heart stops, chest compressions can also be performed. Awareness about these procedures can perhaps save a dogs from death and allow him to live and play another day of fetch.

Many organizations, which previously provided training and certification in traditional CPR only, are now teaching pet CPR too and the concept is fast gaining popularity. The Red Cross in your locality may be conducting these classes and if you are interested in training you must contact them. You never know when such expertise may come to use.
