Basic Dog Obedience Training

I cannot stress more the significance of obedience training for your dog. Besides it is very big factor to the well being of your dog and your own pleasure in owning a dog.

Dog owners would absolutely enjoy more sharing a house, a car or even spending the time together walking your dog in the public, when your dog can be told to eliminate outside (house training), to come, to sit or to stay easily at your order.

Obedience Training also proved to be a very clear sign of responsible ownership, it is so widely known that if your dog can follow these basic obedience commands as well as walking on leash with ease and some other simple task, your dog can receive the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Certification.

This Certification is an evidence that your dog is sociable, well behaved and not dangerous to community. In some state this CGC Certification is a benchmark of your dog behavior and responsible dog ownership.

Dog owners more than others those who are new in general faces challenges in training their dog, it is because they do not understand that dogs think and act different from us. They failed to make much advancement in dog training because they failed to realize that dog communicate differently from us.

The major blunder made by new dog owners is having a lot of command and inconsistency in their training routines. Remember that consistency is very important, do not say 2 words for the same of action that you want your dog to obey.

Here below are some commonly used basic dog obedience commands that you should start with prior going to other more advance command, that will help you as dog owner to feel good bringing your dog for a walk in the park or in public areas.

Come: this command is used to recall your dog

Sit: this command tell your dog to be in sitting position.

Stay: the dog must keep still in any position whether it is sitting, down or in that location where the command is given until released by you

Down: this command tells the dog to go down with its front feet and rear legs are touching the ground.

Here are some information how you can really improve the effectiveness and the speed of your dog learning:

1. At all times you must use the same command words and in the same tone or speed of speaking

2. Have patience, your dog will fail you.

3. The dog has single track mind, teach one thing at a time, do not try to teach a lot of command in one single training session

4. When your dog did anything right or wrong, your rewards and punishment should come almost immediately. Do not punish or reward after a long delay from the act itself because your dog will not be able to connect the two.

5. Develop bonding with your dog by taking him out for an exercise or play with him. All training session should be based on this relationship.

6. Before training your dog, you should get trustworthy dog training manual and go through it thoroughly before starting your dog training session. It is much more difficult to ask your dog to unlearn wrong things than learning new things

7. Do not call your dog to come to you to punish, you will give them wrong understanding that the word come means punishment.

8. Do not allow other people to give any command to your dog especially when you are training him.

9. Do not train your dog when you are not in the mood or when you are not feeling well.

10. Do not get violence with your dog.

Obedience Training is a clear sign of responsible dog ownership. Every responsible dog owner should strive to train his/her dog to at least acquire these basic obedience skills.

Let a Wagging Tail Bring Joy to Someone in Need - Learn About Dog Certification For Visiting

Dog Certification and Visiting plays an important role in the well being of many people. Certified dogs often play a major part in Animal Assisted Therapy Programs as well as volunteered visits. The visits by certified dogs can:

- Increase the self esteem and

- Decrease the anxiety levels of patients who could be injured, confused or even scared.

These dogs are sociable and well-trained, bringing a lighter mood to a somber situation and often being used as a diversion for patients undergoing uncomfortable or painful circumstances.

Certified visiting dogs can help children and adults alike on a multitude of levels as they provide unconditional love and emotional support. It has been well noted that children in particular respond positively to the presence of a friendly dog.

Requirements for a Dog to be Certified

- First of all a dog needs to have the ability to pass the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test.

- They need to pass a variety of social and obedience tests including but not limited to sitting quietly and allowing a stranger to shake their owner's hand, as well as petting the dog, brushing them and examining them.

- As well as passing regular health requirements, the dog should know many basic commands and obey them regardless of the distractions posed by the examiner.

- They should be able to greet another dog in a non-aggressive way.

- Responses to sudden caresses or movements should be calm and patient.

- The dog should not be nervous, shy, clingy or aggressive in any way.

Type of Nature a Dog Needs For This Work

In order for a dog to participate in this type of work, they need a strong bond with their owner first and foremost. It is a team effort and the owner needs to be just as comfortable as the dog in the presence of strangers who may be seriously ill.

The dog itself needs to be gentle, calm and obedient. They should be used to socializing with people of all ages and races as well as other dogs.

Certified dogs need to be friendly and able to receive rough handling or be exposed to shouting, screaming and sudden movements without snapping, growling or barking.

It is advisable for the dog to have attended obedience classes with other dogs. The dog should be able to control themselves and be controlled by their owner with just a word or gesture, despite the nearby distractions.

Expectations for a Certified Dog

There are many behaviors expected from a certified dog.

- They should have the potential to be used as a therapy dog in a hospital or home setting as well as taking the occasional break in every day routine to take part in a volunteered visit.

- The owner must have total command of the dog but should be able to leave the dog with a stranger for a short period of time if needed.

- The dogs need to provide gentle and affectionate love and support to those that need it the most by helping the patient progress and often providing a channel between patient and caregiver especially in cases where communication is not possible.

- They should be able to meet strangers, accept petting from a crowd of people, respond positively to any form of contact and immediately obey the commands of their owner.

Rules and Expectations of a Visit

The main rules that a certified dog must obey during a visit include the following:

· Instant obeying of owner's commands

· Quietly and calmly allowing the patient to pet and touch the dog

· Only jumping onto a chair if commanded to

· Non-aggressive behavior

· Ability to perform basic commands such as sit, stay, shake paw etc.

· Remain well-controlled despite of distractions or disturbing events

· Take exceptional care around respiratory equipment and wheelchairs

· Staying calm during a walk or around other dogs and children who may be excitable themselves

· No jumping at people or other animals

· Allow the patient to take the lead in regards to how much contact they wish for

During a visit, it is essential that the dog is prepared for the unexpected at all times as it can be an inconsistent atmosphere. A lot of dogs do not have the personality to suit this and can become withdrawn or hostile so the correct manner and temperament is extremely important.

The patient could easily need the use of a cane, crutch or wheelchair and the dog should be able to confidently walk alongside these types of peripherals without become anxious.

The basis of the visits is to give the patient a distraction from their condition and hopefully aid their recovery and increase their comfort. The dog should bring a tranquil and soothing effect to the visit; easily socializing with the patient and making them feel accepted. It is imperative that the dog does not reject the patient but instead allow them to have as little or as much contact as possible. The dog should also be impeccably clean in case of infection.

The dog should not jump on a chair unless commanded to and should never jump up at or rush at a patient. Snapping and growling is strictly forbidden and instant obedience is of the utmost importance. It is crucial that the dog allows the patient to hold their leash, pet them roughly or gently along any part of their body and be loud without the dog becoming alarmed. A patient may be clumsy, loud, and rough and have jerked movements; a certified dog needs to be prepared for this and more.

Visiting dogs often encounter people who are withdrawn and avoid social interaction so the dog has the potential to bring them out of their shell and in touch with people socially. These types of visits can become tiring or stressful for the dog so the owner should know their dog's limits and respond accordingly.

These visits do a lot of good for people who are depressed or inhibited and leading a solitary lifestyle. The elderly can garner a sense of companionship especially if they do not have frequent family visits. A child with difficulties reading or speaking can talk to a visiting dog without receiving judgment or negativity in return.

Many people respond better to visiting dogs than to people and often remember the visits fondly afterwards feeling an overall beneficial effect to their mental and emotional state. It can take some people a while to respond to the dogs but if they do, the benefits they reap are worth the effort.

Pet Safety During the Holidays

The holidays are here and the time of years gets really busy for us all. We start to think about family, traveling, holiday music, and sometimes it easy to forget about our small dogs or small pets.

My article today is about helpful dog safety tips and suggestions to remind us to keep out pets safe while it starts to get a bit wild during the holiday season. Some might think that the information might be obvious or common sense, but when you mind is in the holiday cheer you might simply forget all these things.

Here are some helpful tips that I hope make your holiday happy for you and your pets.

1. Keep a checklist posted on the refrigerator or some easily accessed area of daily activities. Make sure you include your pet on the activities list. You know how much small dogs love to be walked.

2. When your guest ask if they can help you with anything remind them not to give human food to your pets. Ask them to play with your dog during play time or help you with dog training and provide your guest with the healthy snacks you want your dog eating. We have all heard of stories of people feeding turkey bones to dogs, yikes!

3. Make sure you to keep you cleaning supplies, medicines, insecticides and other harmful items locked and stored away from you pets.

4. Keep your pets leash on with its identification tags on during this time of year.

5. It is best to keep your small dog away from the Christmas tree as dogs love to snack on anything they might be able to fit into their little mouths.

6. If you are planning on traveling make sure you make arrangements as soon as possible. Including finding hotels and travel places that are pet friendly or finding a pet hotel if you plan to leave you pet back home. I know last year all the pet care places were full and I had to leave my dog with a neighbor. Not the optimal solution, but I should have made plans in advance.

7. Limit surprises by reminding your friends and family that you have a pet and understand your needs for your pet including nutrition, exercise and training.

These are just a few of the tips I hope will make your holiday season a more joyful experience this year. A simple reminder like this article can help you avoid harmful and expensive situations for you and your pet. It is always a good idea to remember our small pets when we get busy during this time of the year.

Happy Holidays.

Organic Olive Extract For Dog Arthritis and Aching Joints

Organic olive extract for dogs is in demand to treat dog arthritis and aching joints because it contains hydroxytyrosol - the highly potent and protective olive polyphenol found in olive pulp juice extract. Olives and olive oil are a rich source of polyphenols (naturally occurring antioxidants), and because of its unique structure, hydroxytyrosol is rapidly absorbed by the dog's body and therefore extraordinarily bioactive (that means it has a beneficial affect at the cell tissue level). Using a new patented, proprietary extraction process allows the benefits of this natural olive juice to be produced with this increased concentration of hydroxytyrosol.

Doesn't it just break your heart to see your dog aging more and more and struggle to remain active as each week passes? Pets, and their human counterparts, are plagued with the same conditions such as arthritis, aching joints, and a host of other ailments. Do you see symptoms in your dog such as:

  • Reluctance to walk, climb stairs, jump or play?

  • Limping or well behind on walks?

  • Difficulty rising from a resting position?

  • Noticeable discomfort or displeasure with touch?

If so, these are probably signs of dog arthritis or aching joints caused by inflammation of the joints. This can be associated with chronic pain, swelling, stiffness, and fatigue. As a result, muscles, ligaments, and tendons may weaken. A dog with arthritis is less active, and as exercise level declines, the risks of cardiovascular disease and fractures increase. There is no known treatment that can reverse this degeneration process, and the health and vitality of your pet are of top importance as a "pet parent."

In human studies, organic extract from olives was shown to decrease the symptoms associated with arthritis including inflammation and pain, and improve the quality of life through greater mobility. Increased mobility, via movement and exercise, in turn improves balance, strengthens bones and muscles, improves cardiovascular function and decreases depression. Organic extract from olives was also shown to decrease biomarkers of inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Also, the use of an organic olive fruit processed within 24 to 48 hours after being picked to produce the organic extract allows you to be confident you are not introducing additional synthetic ingredients, antibiotics, or growth hormones into your pet. You should always look for a product label showing a proper organic certification such as the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers - a certifying association since 1973). This is always an interesting consideration when you note that for the vast majority of human history, farming was indeed only organic - it was only recently that chemicals were added... Because its all natural and organic, it is in fact human-grade ingredients, and thus is perfectly safe for your pet - there are no known drug interactions to be concerned about.

The benefits of olive and olive oil has been well documented in the media and in countless articles touting the benefits of the Mediterranean diet (people living in Mediterranean countries tend to consume relatively high amounts of fat, but they have far fewer rates of cardiovascular disease than in countries like the United States where similar levels of fat are found - one of the main explanations is thought to be the health effects of olive oil included in the Mediterranean diet). Many scientific studies have shown these benefits to be true including researchers in France's INRA (the French National Institute for Agricultural Research - the largest agricultural research institute in Europe). They revealed the olive polyphenols oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol had an impact on inflammation in bones (these findings were later confirmed in animal studies). The INRA stated "olive extract supplement decreases pain and improves daily activities in adults with osteoarthritis..." Other nutrition science research show the principal source of fat in the Mediterranean diet is olive oil, and the diet pattern promotes good health and longevity, protection against asthma and allergies, and decreases the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

So not only do you get an improved quality of life for your dog arthritis and aching joints and improved bone health, but other studies have linked the specific benefits of organic extract from olives and hydroxytyrosol to better brain health, protection against stomach ulcers and cancer, eye health (specifically AMD - Age-related Macular Degeneration - the leading cause of legal blindness for people over 55 years old), and beneficial effects on preventing obesity and diabetes. "Olive oil is the principal source of fat in the Mediterranean diet, and hydroxytyrosol is considered to be one of the most potent determinants of its efficacy," states Dr. Liu, University of Kentucky in an interview for the website nutraingredients.com.

Benefits seen by owners of dogs taking organic extract for dogs for dog arthritis and aching joints include a healthier skin and coat, digestive improvements, better vision, higher levels of endurance and energy, and better overall emotional health. Sporting dog clients have specifically indicated better muscle recovery, better appetites and improved digestion as a result of taking organic extract from olives. Your dog is a valued member of your family, and should be provided the highest quality nutraceuticals, just as you would take yourself or give to your children. Everyone is starting to realize natural products can provide a number of benefits with fewer side effects compared to prescription drugs, and are by extension doing the same for their pets.

This new organic extract for dogs just made available to the market using this patented, proprietary process is just the product to make your dog happy and active again and relieve the dog arthritis and aching joints.

Organic Products

Zero chemical treatment during manufacturing: this is the main feature of organic products in general. They require certification and special labeling for people to recognize them. Considered not only effective but also very economical, organic products are environmentally responsible as they correspond to the new tendencies to reduce pollution and the stress on the environment. Lots of items are now available in plenty of product categories from food and packaging materials to cleaning solutions, clothes, and sustainable building materials. Organic products normally correspond to the laws of ecological production, and every country has its own set of regulations.

For the majority of people, it is nearly impossible to turn to organic products exclusively, because the market is undoubtedly dominated by non-organic items. A first step towards a more ecological lifestyle is the use of several organic items. Start with food for instance and try to prepare all of your meals with fresh natural ingredients that are free of toxins, chemicals, additives and hormones. You will feel a lot better in terms of vital energy and overall health condition. People who suffer from chronic ailments should only consume organic products. The benefits are manifold and they cannot result from a regular conventional diet.

Besides food there are lots of other organic products that have no toxicity at all. House cleaning makes the best example here. If you manage to replace the conventional cleaners with some bio-degradable solvents that have a minimum of toxicity, you will be free of all the health risks and threats that accompany the use of chemicals. Children and adults alike have a lot to gain from the consume of cleaner and safer materials based on ecological ingredients.

Organic products are now available in many hypermarkets and online. The main concern is that some people have started to wonder whether the organic label really defines a clean ecological content too. Fraud is possible, consequently, you'd better check the labels for certifications from accredited control organizations. The testing is complex, and authorities usually make it a priority, but accidents are possible. Even so, the standardization process is not perfect, and a faulty system leaves room for mistakes and fraudulent activities.

A Word of Caution Regarding Pet Grooming Services

Any cat or dog owner will tell you how important grooming is in the life of their pet. Whether this is a chore they choose to do by themselves at home, or use the services of a pet grooming professional. If you take your dog to a pet grooming expert, be careful who you take them to. There are plenty of horror stories out there that will make any responsible pet owner shutter. You must know and trust your pet groomer or disastrous results may occur. This article is a helpful guide to watching for red flags when you visit your local pet grooming expert whether you have used them for a long time or it is a first time visit.

If it is a first time visit, ask the groomer to look at the grooming area. Make sure the equipment used is right for your pet. Look in the kennel area to see if there is fresh water and the cages are clean. If your pet is put into a soiled kennel, they have a high chance of catching a transmittable disease. Make sure there is a soft area for the animal to lie on like a blanket or towel. A red flag should go up if you see multiple colors of hair on the floor. This means that the pet grooming professional is not sanitizing between animals. Look at the clippers. Be assured that they are sanitized. If the clippers have dried blood or hair on them, you need to find another groomer.

The personal appearance of the pet grooming expert is also important. Look for stains or blood on their clothing. If the groomer is not clean, you can be assured that your pet will not be handled in a sanitary manner. Also watch how the groomer interacts with your animal. If they are abrasive in either manner or speech, you might want to redirect your business. If they are not conscious of their negative approach to your pet while you are there, think about how more negative are harmful the pet grooming professional will be if you are not there.

The first thing a pet owner should look for is the animal's attitude when returning from a groomer. Of course most pets will be shaken, but if an animal acts extremely shy or skittish after the appointment a further look in the pet groomer's practices may need to be explored. Look for cuts or abrasions on your animal, especially in hard to find places like under the neck or beneath legs. The pet groomer should talk to you about concerns they find on your pet and detail any wounds or scratches your pet received during the session.

Any unprofessional pet grooming behavior that you witness or discover should be reported to the either the state board that issued the certification or a veterinarian who can contact the proper authorities. Your pet's welfare is important and the proper pet grooming professional needs to be obtained to ensure the physical and emotional safety. Watch closely, and pay attention to both your pet and the groomer.
